LIFE AT CONTENT: Halloween Bug Sugar Cookies

We are resurrecting one of our most popular and creepiest Pinterest posts, just in time for Halloween: Bug Sugar Cookies.

This is by FAR, the easiest Halloween recipe you will find on the Internet, and this simple technique can be used on a variety of applications.

Ingredients

Sugar Cookie Dough (select one):

** A note on the plastic bugs: You may be tempted to dig around the toy box for some plastic bugs. We’d suggest, especially if sharing these treats, to purchase new/unused bugs specifically for this edible project. If you do use preowned toys, be sure to properly disinfect prior to use.

Step 1

Ready slice-and-bake dough or premade sugar cookie dough (form into balls for round cookie) and baked as instructed.

SAFETY NOTE: Do NOT bake the cookies with the plastic bugs on them.

Step 2

Select a few bugs that have distinct features: wings, legs, antenna that will be easy to identify. Turn the insect over, so the best features are facing the cookie surface.

TIP: If you’re not sure which side will “press best”, try sampling with some play-dough.

Step 3

During the cooling process, 1-2 minutes out of the oven (before the cookie hardens), gently press the plastic toy insects into the surface of the cooling dough. Don’t push all the way, just enough to make an indentation.

TIP: Be sure to push each of the insects district features (head, antenna, legs) in well. For some of the smaller features, I used a toothpick to push in the detail.

Step 4

Gently remove the plastic toy from the cookie and allow to harden, prior to removing from the cookie tray. Using a spatula, carefully remove the cookies from the tray and finish cooling on a rack.

So simple!

Certain bugs definitely come out better than others, but overall they look awesome, especially all together on the plate.

My personal favorites are the centipede, spider and ant!
